The LaserWriter 8.1.1 program is special software (called a "driver") that your Macintosh uses when you print documents. This version of LaserWriter is the latest version available when you purchased your computer. (Your computer uses the LaserWriter driver when you print on a PostScript or PostScript compatible printer on an AppleTalk or EtherTalk network.)
LaserWriter 8.1.1 is shipped with PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files that contain information about specific features of LaserWriter printer models. You'll need to install the folder containing these files when you install LaserWriter 8.1.1.

Before Installing LaserWriter 8
Before you install LaserWriter 8.1.1, check the information below about which files in your System Folder should be replaced with newer versions when you install, and which older files you should keep or remove.
The LaserWriter 8 driver and other printer driver files are kept in the Extensions folder inside the System Folder.
Ñ Remove the LaserWriter 8 (version 8.0) driver from the Extensions folder, if it is present.
Ñ Remove the folder named Printer Descriptions from the Extensions folder, if it is present. Rename the folder "Temp", and save it for later use.
IMPORTANT: Do not throw away the LaserWriter 7 driver. Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the new features of the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver, or have small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you have a LaserWriter 7 driver, you may need to use it when printing from such programs. Do not remove it from your System Folder.
Installing LaserWriter 8.1.1
1. Make sure your System Folder on your hard disk is closed.
2. Drag the LaserWriter 8 icon from the LaserWriter 8.1.1 Software folder to the System Folder icon.

3. You'll be asked if you want LaserWriter 8 placed in the Extensions folder. Click Yes.
4. Open the System Folder on your hard disk and locate the Extensions folder.
5. Locate the folder named Printer Descriptions in the LaserWriter 8.1.1 Software folder in Apple Extras. Drag the Printer Descriptions folder to the Extensions folder.
6. If you have an older Printer Descriptions folder that you renamed "Temp" (under "Before Installing LaserWriter 8.1.1" above), open that folder now and check to see if it contains PPD files for any non-Apple printers. (Apple PPD files have names that always begin with the word "LaserWriter." Non-Apple PPD files have names that do not begin with the word "LaserWriter.") Drag any non-Apple PPD files into the Printer Descriptions folder you installed in step 5. Then drag the Temp folder to the Trash.
7. Close the System Folder.
8. Choose the Chooser from the Apple menu and select the LaserWriter 8 icon.
9. Select your printer in the Chooser and click Setup.
10. Click Auto Setup in the Setup dialogue box. The correct PPD file for your printer is automatically selected.
If you do not have an appropriate PPD file for your printer, click the Use Generic button.
11. Close the Chooser.
About Creating EPS Files
You can create an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file in many application programs by clicking File or PostScript File in the Print dialogue box, then clicking Save. Please note:
Ñ To avoid creating a very large EPS file, don't select the All option or the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option in the EPS dialogue box's Font Inclusion pop-up menu.
Ñ If you create an EPS file with no fonts included, fonts in the document appear on your screen, but Courier may be substituted when you print.
Ñ If you create an EPS file with preview information included, programs that create their own PostScript code may not display the EPS file accurately on the screen.
Using LaserWriter 8.1.1
When using the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver, you should be aware of the following situations. Some happen with all LaserWriter printers and others happen only with specific models.
All LaserWriters
Ñ The LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver allows some printers to use a larger imageable print area on the page. You may find that text in some documents reflows or is clipped to fit the new imageable area.
Ñ If you print using A4 size paper, choose Manual Feed as the Paper Source, and have a B5 size paper tray installed in your printer, the page is clipped to match the B5 paper size.
Ñ Printing multiple documents from the Finder may not work if the documents were created by different application programs.
LaserWriter IIg and IIf
Ñ If you select Manual Feed as the paper source in the First From or Remaining From pop-up menus (in the Print dialogue box), the first page prints on paper from the manual feed tray.
Ñ Some form-printing programs cannot print forms using the Layout settings in the Page Setup dialogue box.
LaserWriter IINT and IINTX
Ñ If you select both the Smooth Graphics and the Invert Image options in the Page Setup Options dialogue box, a PostScript error results.
Ñ Do not use the B5 tray to print envelopes on a LaserWriter IINT. Use the Letter tray instead.
LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630
Ñ You cannot use Auto Select as the Paper Source in the Print dialogue box to print envelopes from the optional envelope feeder.
Ñ If you print at 600 dots per inch (dpi), bitmapped images may appear with lines across the image.
Personal LaserWriter NTR
Ñ When you are printing in the background, no message appears when the printer runs out of paper.
LaserWriter Pro 810
Ñ With some graphics applications, bitmap graphics will be reduced by 25% in size when Precision Bitmap Alignment is specified.
Using LaserWriter 8.1.1 With Application Programs
Some application programs do not yet take advantage of the new features of the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver, or have small incompatibilities that result in printing problems. If you experience problems with a program, contact the publisher of the program. In some cases a newer version of the program may be available.
The following list describes some special cases that you should be aware of when working with some application programs. (There may be other problems with these programs, or with other programs, not mentioned in this document.)
Aldus FreeHand 3.11
Ñ You cannot print using Layout options in the Print dialogue box. If you choose a layout from the Layout pop-up menu, the document does not print and no error message appears.
Ñ EPS files created from within FreeHand cannot be used in other programs.
Ñ Selecting the Unlimited Downloadable Fonts option in the Page Setup Options dialogue box results in a PostScript error.
Aldus PageMaker 4.2a
Ñ You cannot scale EPS images in documents printed using the Layout option in the Page Setup dialogue box.
Aldus Personal Press 2.0
Ñ Using several font style combinations in text can result in spacing problems.
Ñ When working with large EPS files in a document, you may need to increase the amount of memory allocated to the application.
Aldus Persuasion 2.1.2
Ñ When you print a document that contains gradient fill patterns, the document is printed with solid patterns instead of gradients.
Ñ Documents that contain EPS graphics may not print correctly if you select 2-Up or 4-Up printing.
Aldus SuperPaint 3.0
Ñ Rotated or filled polygons print as solid grey objects.
Canvas 3.0.6 (Deneba Software)
Ñ Printing with substituted fonts may result in incorrect line layout.
CricketDraw III 1.0
Ñ If an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver has been saved without preview information, you cannot import the file.
Ñ Be sure that enough space is available on your hard disk when printing large documents; otherwise the program may malfunction.
CricketPresents 2.1
Ñ If an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver has been saved without preview information, you cannot import the file.
Informed Manager 1.3.5 (Shana Corporation)
Ñ Shaded headings in a document may not print correctly.
Ñ Some documents will print with extra pages.
MacDraft 2.1 (Innovative Data Design, Inc.)
Ñ When you print using the Cut Marks option, a PostScript error results.
Microsoft PowerPoint
Ñ In PowerPoint version 2.01f, if an EPS file created with the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver has been saved without preview information, you cannot import the file.
Ñ When importing EPS files, you may want to increase the memory allocated to the application.
Microsoft Works 3.0
Ñ Printing documents that have rotated objects with rounded corners results in a PostScript error.
More 3.1 (Symantec Corporation)
Ñ When creating EPS files with the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver, be sure you have enough disk space to hold the file. No Disk Full error message appears when your hard disk becomes full and cannot hold the entire file.
Publish It! Easy 2.1.9 (TimeWorks, Inc.)
Ñ Use an earlier version of LaserWriter 8, or contact the publisher of the application program.
QuarkXPress 3.11
Ñ If EPS files created by the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver contain certain TrueType fonts, you cannot print the fonts.
Ñ Using Calibrated Colour results in a PostScript error.
ReadySetGo! 4.5 & 5.0 (DesignStudio)
Ñ Use an earlier version of LaserWriter 8, or contact the publisher of the application program.
Studio/8 & Studio/32 (Electronic Arts, Inc.)
Ñ When creating an EPS file with these programs and the LaserWriter 8.1.1 driver, you must select the QuickDraw Printer option.
Other Troubleshooting Tips
Ñ When you are printing with some application programs, the Printer Status dialogue boxes may appear overlapping or misaligned on the screen, preventing you from canceling printing by clicking the Cancel button. Press Command-Period to cancel printing.
Ñ If you see unexpected format results when you print a document, choose Page Setup and check whether the paper size is shown as Other. If so, select the correct paper size.
Ñ Utility programs that attempt to change your current printer without using the Chooser may produce unexpected results.
Ñ With some graphics applications, the Cover Page may not be printed at the end of a multi-page document. Use Cover Page: Before Document.
